What it involves
What are lingual braces?
Lingual braces work in exactly the same way as conventional fixed braces, with one difference: the brackets and wire are bonded to the inner surfaces of the teeth, facing the tongue and palate. From the front there is simply nothing to see.
Because the inner surface of every tooth is different, the brackets have to be made for you. We take an impression or scan, a laboratory produces customised brackets from it, and around six weeks later they are bonded carefully into place.
They are worth being honest about: speech and cleaning take a little getting used to, and most people adapt within a few weeks. In exchange you get the full capability of fixed braces without a bracket on show.
