What it involves
What is endodontics?
Endodontics is the branch of dentistry concerned with the pulp inside a tooth and the tissues around its roots — the name comes from the Greek for 'inside' and 'tooth'. When that pulp becomes infected or inflamed, root canal treatment removes the problem and saves the tooth.
Deep decay, a crack, a failing restoration or a knock to the mouth can all let bacteria reach the pulp. Left alone, that leads to persistent pain and often an abscess. Treated properly, the tooth stays where it is and keeps doing its job.
Root canal treatment has a reputation it no longer deserves. With proper anaesthetic, magnification and modern instruments, most patients tell us afterwards that it felt much like having a filling done. What it reliably does is stop the pain that brought them in.

Working through a microscope lets us find, clean and seal the canals far more precisely than the naked eye allows.
